1. The small trim piece behind the drivers door is missing (the one that catches on the pocket of your cargo shorts until it breaks off).

2. The left side of the driver’s side sun visor is flappy and hangs down a bit.

3. The interior door panel on the drivers side is cracked internally and pulls away from the glass (every C4 vette is like this, at least until its owner spends $500 for a new, and possibly stronger, reproduction door panel).

4. The weatherstripping around the trunk, windshield and along the top of the windows is dried out and cracked. The car is still watertight, but if I removed the targa top I have no doubt that is would never be watertight again until I replaced the seal around the windshield.

5. There a small spot on the trim piece around the power window switches on the driver’s door panel where the rubberized finish has rubbed off. This is also the spot that my knee happens to rest against once I’ve set the cruise control and moved my left foot to a more comfortable position away from the pedals.

6. The shift boot leather is starting to come apart at one end of the seam.

7. The leather seats are not as soft and supple as I’m sure they once were 23 years ago, no matter how often I lexol them.

8. The DMF makes some noise at idle when not under load, but given the expense and effort that will be required to replace the clutch and convert the car to a solid flywheel, the OEM clutch is going to stay in there for as long as possible. It also turns out that the primary rule for driving my car is that any kind of a hard launch or clutch drop is a no-go. I really don’t want to do the clutch on it anytime soon.

Things fixed in almost a year of ownership and 14k as a daily driver on a car that had only previously covered 56k over 23 years:

1. A leaking water pump was replaced before it killed the opti-spark below it.

2. Worn lower ball joints replaced with new moog parts, and new polyurethane bushings were installed since the lower arms were off the car anyway. (The alignment shop says 50 or 60K is about par for the course on C4 lower ball joints).

3. Both rear wheel bearing assemblies were replaced within a few thousand miles of each other. This also a part that lasts no more than 60 or 70K on a C4.

4. Electronic A/C controller (the in-dash guy) and the programmer box (the under-dash guy with all the vacuum solenoids) were repaired/rebuilt by the electronics dude out there that repairs these boxes for a living. The A/C was starting to do weird things at times due to failing capacitors and cracked soldier joints on the boards in these two boxes.

5. A month ago I replaced the A/C compressor after the previous one gave it up.

Things fixed that failed through no fault of the car:

The computer that runs the Bose audio system was sent out to be repaired/rebuilt after a jug of water fell over in the cargo area and leaked out on a trip up to the lake. The water leaked into the storage compartment below the cargo area and onto the box the runs the audio system. Do not spill liquids in the back of your C4.

Things upgraded:

1. Rear brakes. New calipers, stainless steel lines, slotted rotors and hawk HPS pads, because I like to stop. The front brakes getting a similar treatment, as well as being upgraded to the larger J55 spec found on ZR-1, the Z51 track handling package and the later Grand Sports, is on the project list. The A/C compressor taking a dump has delayed my front brake upgrade.

Overall, for a 23 year old GM product, I can’t complain too much.

Wow your C4 sounds shockingly similar to mine based on the problems. Mine is an 87 and has problems 3, 4, and 7, could probably use new ball joints and bushings, and needs a the radio and ac controllers replaced. And the ac compressor went up, but that won't get fixed.

Driver mod/ life mod would be ditch cargo shorts or even cargo pants for that matter.

The weatherstripping is being kind to give you a heads up to be ready before the impending monsoon.

My understanding is that these are all problems every C4 has. Mine is a 93, LT1/6 speed. It still makes for an entertaining way to drive to work.

It is. Overall, I have not really seen or driven a better C4 than mine, although I’m sure they do exist.

I just have two things to say:

1. I need a C4 in my life. How do you like it over all

2. Why are you wearing cargo shorts?
